The REMS program may still be on hold, but there are other grant opportunities out there that address school safety issues. The Department of Justice just announced the deadlines for the 2011 Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Secure Our Schools grant. Could it be a good fit for your district?
The Secure our Schools grant pays for up to 50% of one or more of the following options: "the placement and use of metal detectors, locks, lighting, and other deterrent measures; security assessments; anti-violence initiatives; security training of personnel and students; coordination with local law enforcement; and/or any other measure that may provide a significant improvement in security." As part of the grant, schools have to demonstrate their commitment to providing a comprehensive approach to reducing school violence.
The actual applicant for a COPS grant is the local law enforcement agency. As a result, this is a great opportunity for districts that have strong working relationships with their local police or sheriff's department.
The grant also requires a 50% local cash match. Curious about how to find these matching funds? Get in touch with a Grant Helper and we can advise on the different options available.
The COPS guidelines should be released on April 29th, with two deadlines; the priority application deadline is May 25th, but COPS will be accepting applications up until June 8th, 2011.
