In 2012, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, the official poverty rate in the U.S. was 15.0 percent. There were 46.5 million people in poverty. Municipalities and non-profit organizations are constantly working to ease the burden on the impoverished by creating outreach programs, providing education, and building affordable housing.
